A new show at the Byre, a very nervous artists talk, and a gift for the collection. July has been yet another busy month.
The Byre @ Hulabhaig
Uinneag exhbition was a great success, not only did it give me a chance to meet a few island artists previously unknown to me, be but it was the best attended show so far. We must be doing something right!

Next in the Byre, opening 8th August we see Ishbel Murray showing some of her most recent work.
Sgàilean agus Faileasan (Shadows and Reflections)
New work from Ishbel Murray exploring the contrived or orderly aspect of nature in public spaces through highly coloured landscape work and restricted palette small still life work.
In restricting the choice of subject matter to the everyday and ordinary - a cup and saucer, a city park or a holiday postcard study, the images here are testing the principle that ‘familiarity encourages meditation’. There are no people walking in the park, having tea, making photocopies or waiting for the bus - the gaze of the viewer provides the human element. Realism and abstraction combine so that the focus is on composition, colour, form - ‘shadows and reflections’.

The Hulabhaig Collection is a growing collection of Island Contemporary Art, a research project into an islands visual art identity.
The Byre at Hulabhaig is an extention to the collection, a new contemporary art space for artists to explore possibilities and inspire new work, a chance to see work in a contemporary ‘White Cube’ space.
My aim as curator, it is to reach out to artists whose work is very much ‘of these islands’. I hope to meet artists, discuss ideas and influences, explore contemporary and historic issues delivered though island visual art and follow up with further research to document and share my findings.
And on the way maybe acquire some great artworks for the collection.
